OUR STORY

Local farmers & family business

Midlands Eggs was founded in 2011 by two local egg farmers, Dave Teichmann and Derek Ross. Each had built a trusted brand of their own. Together they invested in a centralised, food-safety-compliant egg packing facility in the KZN Midlands — and Midlands Eggs was born.

Word spread. One by one, other family farms joined the team. Today six local farmers supply their eggs into our facility, and we’re one of the few packers that handle Free Range, Barn and Conventional eggs under one roof. Different farming systems, one standard: quality, consistent, great-tasting eggs and we work hard so you taste it in every pack.

Quality: The Difference Is Inside

To some, an egg is just an egg.
We disagree.

We believe you can taste the difference when something’s been done with care and pride. That’s why we’ve always focused on quality — and in 2018, we took that belief one step further.

That’s when we invested in a Moba Omnia FT series grader — a state-of-the-art machine equipped with automated detection for dirt, cracks, and blood spots. It became the heart of our grading operation and has helped us raise the bar in quality control.

Thanks to advanced acoustic crack detection, even the finest hairline cracks (the kind invisible to the naked eye) get picked up and removed — leaving only the best eggs for you. Because the last thing you want is a cracked egg ruining your breakfast!

It’s not perfect — but it sure beats hand-sorting and screening eggs over a light, like in the old days.

FARMS BEHIND THE EGGS

Our farmers

We’re proudly local. All our eggs come from six farms in the KZN Midlands, delivered on reusable plastic trays that are cleaned and sanitised between trips. A colour-coded system prevents mix-ups during collection and transport and is a key part of our traceability — we can follow each batch from farm to store.

UPGRADED IN 2018

Our grader

In 2018, we took a big step for quality and consistency by importing a Moba Omnia 170 FT, a state-of-the-art egg grader from Europe. It lets us handle eggs efficiently and check every single egg with automated detection systems:

  • Acoustic crack detection – the grader gently “taps” each egg and listens. If the sound suggests a crack (even hairline), that egg is separated.
  • Leaker & dirty-egg detection – cameras and sensors look for wet patches, leaks or dirt on the shell, automatically removing those eggs as undergrades.
  • Blood-spot detection – powerful lighting and optical sensors look through the egg to pick up tiny blood spots, which are then diverted.

All of this happens at speed, giving us tighter control over every egg that goes through our facility. The result is cleaner packs, fewer defects, and more confidence for you.
